Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce 52 major reforms in the Indian Railways in 52 weeks in 2026. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting with senior railway officials in New Delhi. The meeting emphasised the spirit of the New Year and the commitment to bringing significant reforms in the Railways.
In the meeting, the minister concentrated on factors like infrastructure development, maintenance, and capacity enhancement initiatives. There was also suggestion about requirement of substantial reforms in Indian Railways to improve passenger amenities and operational safety. The '52 Reforms in 52 Weeks' plan will focus on systemic improvements in efficiency, governance, and service delivery.
The Railway Ministry highlighted a focus on passenger safety. It noted that consequential train accidents reduced by around 90% from 135 in 2014-15 to 11 in 2025-26, and aiming to bring it down to a single digit. Other reforms outlined include accelerating AI and technology, revamping talent and training programs, and upgrading food and catering services. It also reaffirmed its commitment to reforms, safety, technological progress, and passenger-centric growth.
