The import of natural rubber jumped by more than three-fold and stood at 46,581 tonnes in September compared to 14,779 tonnes recorded in the same period last year, as per report compiled by rubber board. This jump in import can be attributed to lower global prices and fall in domestic production especially in Kerala state.

During April-September period in current year, the total import of rubber was higher by 59% and stood at 179,292 tonnes compared to 112,641 tonnes a year ago. The production however dropped by 13% to 343,000 tonnes during April-September period against 395,700 tonnes in the same period last year.

The international market prices of rubber are about Rs 156 per kg whereas prices in domestic market are at Rs 168 per kg. Since the price is international market is at 8-10 percent lower than the domestic prices, therefore tyre manufacturers and other industries are more inclined to import rubber.
