Asian markets settled mixed on Thursday tracking Wall Street's fall overnight due to investor jitters over rising geopolitical tensions around the world, including US President Donald Trump's threats to take control of Greenland and political unrest in Iran. Chinese and Hong Kong shares dipped after the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on advanced AI chips while permitting restricted Nvidia exports to China. Also, private reports suggested that Chinese authorities have instructed domestic companies to halt the use of cybersecurity software from over a dozen US and Israeli firms, citing national security concerns. Japanese Nikkei declined as a stronger yen impacted exporters and technology stock momentum waned. Meanwhile, Seoul shares hit another record high as South Korea’s central bank, Bank of Korea, held benchmark rate steady at 2.50% in line with expectations and hinted at an extended pause before any cuts.
