Markets witness bloodbath after Govt raises STT on F&O in Budget 2026-27

Indian equity markets turned negative and were trading deeply in red in afternoon session as Finance Minister (FM) raised Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on F&O in Budget 2026-27. Sensex fell over 1900 points while Nifty dropped over 400 points. The Securities Transaction Tax charged on futures trading has been increased to 0.05 per cent from 0.02 per cent of the transaction value, making futures trades slightly more expensive. 

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 80365.20, down by 1904.58 points or 2.32% after trading in a range of 80348.66 and 82726.65. There were 6 stocks advancing against 24 stocks declining on the index.

The top losing sectoral indices on the BSE were Capital Goods down by 5.56%, PSU down by 5.26%, Metal down by 4.93%, Realty down by 4.28% and Industrials down by 4.06%, while there were no gainers.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Sun Pharma up by 1.33%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 0.76%, HDFC Bank up by 0.45%, TCS up by 0.40% and ICICI Bank up by 0.15%. On the flip side, Bharat Electronics down by 3.90%, SBI down by 3.63%, HCL Technologies down by 3.00%, Asian Paints down by 2.46% and Tata Steel down by 2.46% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its latest monthly data has showed that India's international trade in services showed notable momentum in December 2025, with both exports and imports registering year-on-year and month on month growth.

The value of services exports (receipts) stood at $41,775 million in December 2025, reflecting a 21.93 per cent growth as compared to $34,262 million in November 2025. Services exports were 13.0 per cent higher compared to the same month last year. In October 2025, they stood at $35,167 million.

Further, services imports (payments) reached $19,104 million in December 2025, marking a 13.20 per cent rise over $16,877 million in November 2025. Services imports rose 7.3 per cent compared to the same month last year. In October 2025, they stood at $17,729 million.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 24906.45, down by 414.20 points or 1.64% after trading in a range of 24906.25 and 25440.90. There were 5 stocks advancing against 45 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Max Healthcare up by 2.60%, Sun Pharma up by 0.73%, Dr. Reddy's Lab up by 0.48%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 0.47% and TCS up by 0.10%. On the flip side, Bharat Electronics down by 9.08%, Hindalco down by 5.85%, SBI down by 4.66%, JIO Financial down by 3.71% and HCL Technologies down by 3.64% were the top losers.
