At meetings with EC, parties seek one or two-phase assembly polls in Assam

Recognised national and state political parties of Assam, during their meetings with the EC, asked for holding the assembly polls in Assam in either a single or a maximum of two phases in Assam.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, arrived in Guwahati yesterday for a three-day visit to take stock of the preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. 

The CEC is also scheduled to hold meetings with the chief secretary, home secretary, director general of police, chief electoral officer, police nodal officer and other senior officials of the state government during the day.

The meetings were held with Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress, All India United Democratic Front, Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front and United People’s Party Liberal.

 A majority of the political parties reportedly demanded the conduct of the elections in a single phase or a maximum of two phases. They also gave suggestions for ensuring the peaceful conduct of the polls. 

Several parties also urged the Commission to schedule election dates keeping in mind the celebration of the Bihu festival, which holds significant cultural importance in the state.

The Election Commission assured all stakeholders that their suggestions would be carefully examined. The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting elections in a free, fair, inclusive and violence-free manner, while strictly adhering to constitutional principles and the Model Code of Conduct.

The current term of the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly is set to conclude on 20 May 2026.
