The Lok Sabha (LS) witnessed repeated adjournments after Opposition members staged protests over rising LPG prices and supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
As the House reassembled at 12 noon after an earlier adjournment over the same issue, Opposition MPs trooped into the well raising slogans over the LPG situation and demanding a discussion. Presiding Officer Sandhya Rai made repeated appeals for maintaining order in the House but the Opposition Benches didn't relent and kept creating a ruckus.
As the uproar continued, with the Opposition relentlessly disobeying the Chair, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Opposition for obstructing the House’s functioning. He also slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for refusing to understand the pulse of the people saying if the principal opposition continues to behave in such a manner, people will punish them severely. Rijiju said no one in the Congress party is making their leader see logic. The remarks further inflamed the protests and the Chair soon adjourned the House again until 2.00 pm.
Earlier, when the House convened this morning, the members demanded revocation of suspension of eight lawmakers and also a discussion on the LPG shortages. The Speaker urged the members not to disrupt the House and raise any issues of public concern after the Question Hour, stressing that this time was crucial for matters related to particular constituencies. Minutes after the session stared, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon, stating that the House cannot function amid continuing protests.
