Idea Cellular, India's fourth-biggest mobile phone carrier by subscribers has introduced two low-cost smartphone models as it attempts to enhance usage of third-generation (3G) wireless data services in a price-sensitive market. The company will sell these smartphones at Rs 5,850 and Rs 7,992, respectively.
As an introductory offer, Idea will also bundle free data services. The touch-screen smartphones, based on the Android operating system, are being sourced from Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE, further the company was also considering to enter the tablet PC market.
The company’s net profit after tax for the quarter tumbled 55.45% at Rs 73.94 crore as compared to Rs 165.98 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2010. Total income has increased by 26.13% to Rs 4577.15 crore for the quarter under review from Rs 3628.92 crore for the similar quarter of the previous year.
