Markets start Samvat 2070 on a positive note; Nifty ends at all-time closing high

Muhurat session that made a blockbuster start ended on a flat note, as the indices came off the sessions’ high on some profit booking in the final moments, but still the fireworks continued on Diwali marking a positive beginning to the Samvat 2070. The BSE Sensex hit a new all-time high in the special muhurat trading session, while the Nifty too came close to breach it’s all time high and ended at its all time closing high. Marketmen seems to have taken the advice of Finance Minister P Chidambaram who cautioned against 'excessive exuberance' while at the same time pointing to the good monsoon, rising exports, strong core sector growth and a lower-than-expected current account deficit as good auguries for an economic revival. In the short trading session, PSU stocks remained in demand, while there was some buying in Tata and metal stocks too. However, banking stocks suffered some profit booking.
 
Finally the BSE Sensex closed at 21239.36, up 42.55 points or 0.20% after trading in a range of 21,321.53 and 21,219.13, while the Nifty ended at 6,317.35, up 10.15 points or 0.16% after trading in a range of 6,342.95 and 6,311.15.
 
The broader indices performed much better than their larger counterparts and the BSE Midcap closed higher by 1.05%, while the BSE Smallcap index ended up by 1.37%.
 
The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were PSU up by 0.78%, Healthcare up by 0.77%, Auto up by 0.75%, FMCG up by 0.61% and Metal up by 0.48%.On the other hand BSE Bankex was the lone loser, down by 0.12%.
 
The top gainers of the Sensex were, Tata Motors up by 1.74%, Jindal Steel up by 1.13%, Sun Pharma up by 0.95%, Maruti Suzuki up by 0.86% and Tata Powers was up by 0.85%, while ICICI Bank was down by 0.65%, M&M down by 0.52%, HDFC Bank down by 0.43%, L&T down by 0.26%, HDFC down by 0.25%.
 
The CNX Nifty traded in a narrow band of 6,342.95 and 6,311.15, before closing at 6,317.35.
 
The top gainers of the Nifty were BPCL up by 2.30%,Tata Motors up by 2.02%, Ranbaxy up by 1.91%, Jindal Steel up by 1.35% and PNB was up by, while Asian Paints was down by 0.98%, JP Associates down by 0.92%%, Kotak Bank was down by 0.91%, Indusind Bank was down by 0.89% and Bharti Airtel lost 0.87%.
