US markets end higher on hopes of US-Iran peace deal

22 May 2026 Evaluate

The US markets ended higher on Thursday as investors hoped for a Middle East peace deal on reports that an agreement between the US and Iran had been reached with Pakistani mediation and after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there were ‘some good signs’ that a deal to end the war in Iran could be in sight. Traders took support with the Labor Department released a report showed the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in the US fell by 3,000 to 209,000  in the week ended May 16, aligned with market expectations of 210,000. In the meantime, continuing jobless claims, which are a proxy for outstanding unemployment, rose by 6,000 to 1,782,000, slightly under the expectations of 1,790,000. The results extended the period of stability since the declines in initial claims earlier this year, maintain the backdrop of a robust labor market and adding leeway for the Fed to remain restrictive. However, gains remain capped as a report released by the Commerce Department showed US housing starts were down 2.8% month-on-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.465 million in April 2026, compared to an upwardly revised 1.507 million in March which was the highest level since December 2024 and above forecasts of 1.41 million. The data suggest that high mortgage rates are weighing on builders. Single-family starts were down 9% to 0.93 million, while multi-family starts jumped 14.3% to 0.529 million.

Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 276.31 points or 0.55 percent to 50,285.66, Nasdaq increased 22.73 points or 0.09 percent to 26,293.09 and S&P 500 rose 12.75 points or 0.17 percent to 7,445.72.
