11 Nov 2013 Evaluate

This season after the procurement process started from October 1, the states of Punjab and Haryana have procured over 147 lakh tonnes (LT) of paddy arrival, as per report compiled by food and supplies department officials. Of this, over 106 LT have been procured in Punjab, and over 41 LT have been procured in Haryana. This procurement was despite reports of paddy arriving in discoloured form and higher moisture content due to erratic weather in recent months.

In Punjab, nearly 100 LT or 94.6% of the paddy arrival have been procured by government agencies while the rest has been bought by private rice millers and traders. The districts of Sangrur, Patiala and Ludhiana were leading in paddy procurement.

In Haryana, over 41.13 LT of paddy have arrived so far in various grain markets which is higher than the paddy procurement of 38.89 LT in the same period last year. The government agencies in Haryana have procured nearly 34 LT of paddy this year. The rest has been bought by rice millers and traders. The districts of Kurukshetra, Karnal and Kaithal were leading in paddy arrivals.
