Retail inflation jumps to 4.38% in June amid higher food prices

Retail inflation, measured by the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) with the base year 2024, jumped to 4.38% (Provisional) in June 2026 from 3.93% (Final) in May 2026, primarily due to higher food prices. The latest reading marks the fifth consecutive monthly increase in inflation. Headline inflation has breached the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) medium-term target of 4%. Meanwhile, CPI inflation for Rural and Urban rose to 4.74% and 3.92% in June 2026, from 4.25% and 3.53% in May 2026, respectively. Moreover, the index value for CPI for rural, urban and combined stood at 107.24, 106.69 and 107.00, respectively, for the month of June 2026.

Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), surged to 5.32% (Provisional) for June 2026 as compared to 4.78% (Final) in May 2026. Corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban stood at 5.45% and 5.09%, respectively in June 2026, as compared to 4.85% and 4.66%, respectively in May 2026. Index value for CFPI for rural, urban and combined stood at 106.82, 107.72 and 107.15, respectively, for June 2026. Besides, Housing inflation rate for the month of June 2026 stood at 2.10% (Provisional) and the corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban are 2.66% and 1.90%, respectively.

Top five key items with low inflation at All India combined level in June 2026 were Potato at (-)20.34% as against (-)23.71% in May 2026, Peas at (-)9.67% in June 2026 as against (-)11.47% in May 2026, Motor car and jeep at (-)6.89% in June 2026 as against (-)7.19% in May 2026, Cumin (jeera) at (-)3.75% in June 2026 as against (-)4.59% in May 2026, and Motor cycle and scooter at (-)3.49% in June 2026 as against (-)3.59% in May 2026.

Top five key items with high inflation at All India combined level in June 2026 were Silver Jewellery at 133.21% as against 155.25% in May 2026, Ginger at 50.41% in June 2026 as against 32.50% in May 2026, Gold/Diamond/Platinum Jewellery at 36.82% in June 2026 as against 40.91% in May 2026, Tomato at 31.92% in June 2026 as against 48.43% in May 2026, and Raisin (kishmish) and monacca at 20.52% in June 2026 as against 21.98% in May 2026.

Moreover, inflation in Food and beverages increased to 5.05% in June 2026 from 4.55% in May 2026, inflation in Transport jumped to 4.31% in June 2026 from 1.75% in May 2026, inflation in Restaurants and accommodation services rose to 6.91% in June 2026 from 5.75% in May 2026, inflation in Clothing and footwear increased to 3.23% in June 2026 from 2.98% in May 2026. Also, inflation in Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels inched up to 1.99% in June 2026 from 1.73% in May 2026.
