U.S. markets closed higher on Wednesday after the Labor Department reported a larger-than-expected decline in producer prices for June, easing concerns over inflation. The Labor Department said its producer price index for final demand fell by 0.3 percent in June after climbing by a downwardly revised 0.6 percent in May. Street had expected producer prices to edge down by 0.1 percent compared to the 1.1 percent jump originally reported for the previous month. The report also said the annual rate of producer price growth slowed to 5.5 percent in June from a downwardly revised 6.0 percent in May. Street had expected the annual rate of producer price growth to slow to 6.2 percent from the 6.5 percent originally reported for the previous month.
On the sectoral front, brokerage stocks were among the market's top performers, with the NYSE Arca Broker/Dealer Index surging 2.1 percent to a record closing high. Airline stocks also posted strong gains, as reflected by the 1.6 percent rise in the NYSE Arca Airline Index. Software, banking, and retail stocks also recorded notable strength, while computer hardware, networking, and semiconductor stocks witnessed significant declines.
Nasdaq surged 162.22 points or 0.62 percent to 26,269.227, S&P 500 jumped 28.81 points or 0.38 percent to 7,572.4 and Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 150.37 points or 0.29 percent to 52,658.64.
