Indices maintain gains in late morning deals

17 Jul 2026 Evaluate

Indian equity indices maintained their gains in late morning trade as market participants continued to enlarge their positions. Hectic buying in Reliance Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS, Tech Mahindra and Axis Bank helped both the Sensex and the Nifty to trade above the psychological levels of 77,800 and 24,200, respectively. The sentiments were further supported by Indian rupee appreciating 5 paise at 96.37 per dollar. Traders overlooked a report that Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said India’s inflation remains elevated, with ongoing tensions in the Middle East and prospects of a weak monsoon season seen as key risks for the economy.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in red as investors weighed escalating tensions between the United States and Iran after Tehran vowed to target regional infrastructure if President Donald Trump followed through on threats to strike the country’s key facilities. Back home, on the BSE sectoral front, traders were seen piling up positions in Realty, IT, Bankex, Auto and Energy, while selling was witnessed in Healthcare, Telecom, Capital Goods, Industrials and Power.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 77868.85, up by 681.98 points or 0.88% after trading in a range of 77308.00 and 77989.44. There were 20 stocks advancing against 10 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Realty up by 1.05%, IT up by 0.81%, Bankex up by 0.79%, Auto up by 0.53% and Energy up by 0.44%, while Healthcare down by 1.45%, Telecom down by 1.36%, Capital Goods down by 1.20%, Industrials down by 0.94% and Power down by 0.63% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Reliance Industries up by 2.09%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 1.76%, TCS up by 1.71%, Tech Mahindra up by 1.54% and Axis Bank up by 1.52%. On the flip side, Ultratech Cement down by 0.68%, Interglobe Aviation down by 0.64%, Bharti Airtel down by 0.56%, Eternal down by 0.47% and Maruti Suzuki India down by 0.27% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, with an aim to enhance ease of doing business for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the government is planning to introduce the MSMEs Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and put it to a vote in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Bill is seeking to align the MSMEs Development Act, 2006, with the changing MSME landscape.

The new bill also seeks to strengthen the mechanism for addressing delayed payments, provide for the enforcement of arbitral awards for micro and small units, and introduce flexibility and create enabling provisions for states to decide the composition of the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council (MSEFC), thereby forming more MSEFCs.

The MSMEs account for around 35.4% of manufacturing, around 48.58% of exports, and 31.1% of GDP in India. In Union Budget 2026-27, the government had introduced multiple measures to strengthen the MSME sector by enhancing financial support, promoting innovation, and easing regulatory compliance. Through these initiatives, the Government aims to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in both domestic and global markets.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 24243.00, up by 170.25 points or 0.71% after trading in a range of 24099.05 and 24288.90. There were 29 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index.
