Indices remain under pressure in late morning deals

22 Jul 2026 Evaluate

Domestic equity indices remained under pressure in late morning trade as market participants reduced their positions. Hectic selling in shares of InterGlobe Aviation, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Infosys and Kotak Mahindra Bank dragged the Sensex and Nifty below their psychological levels of 77,000 and 24,050, respectively. Rising crude oil prices weighed on the domestic sentiment. Crude oil prices surged amid escalating tensions in West Asia. Further, A depreciating rupee, which slipped 22 paise to trade at 96.47 against the US dollar, made traders all the more nervous.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in the green following positive cues from the US markets overnight. Back home, in the stock specific development, TVS Motor Company surged as the company, on a consolidated basis, reported a 67.11% rise in its net profit at Rs 1,019.43 crore for Q1FY27, as compared to Rs 610.04 crore for the same quarter in the previous year.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 76921.17, down by 548.94 points or 0.71% after trading in a range of 76722.21 and 77384.95. There were 4 stocks advancing against 26 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Auto up by 0.37%, Capital Goods up by 0.19%, FMCG up by 0.16%, Power up by 0.14% and Telecom up by 0.02%, while Realty down by 1.90%, Healthcare down by 1.09%, Bankex down by 0.81%, IT down by 0.78% and PSU down by 0.63% were the top losing indices on BSE.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary has said that India’s debt-to-GDP ratio has eased to 58.2 per cent (provisional) in FY26 as compared to 58.5 per cent in FY25, reflecting an improvement in the country's debt profile. As of March 31, 2026, the Centre's total debt stood at Rs 201.17 lakh crore (provisional).

He noted that the government's debt servicing burden has eased in the post-pandemic period, with the ratio of debt service (interest payment) to revenue receipts declining from 41.6 per cent in FY21 to 37.6 per cent (provisional) in FY26, indicating a stronger capacity to meet interest obligations through revenue receipts. He further highlighted that in BE 2026-27, the effective capital expenditure of Rs 17.15 lakh crore is higher than fresh debt receipts (fiscal deficit) of Rs 16.96 lakh crore of the government. This implies that borrowings are being fully deployed towards asset creation.

The minister said the central government's capital expenditure during FY21-FY26 stood at Rs 44.03 lakh crore. The increase in capital expenditure as a percentage of GDP has led to an increase in infrastructure development, including roads, railways, urban infrastructure, energy and digital connectivity. The increased capex has led to improved logistics efficiency, generated employment and crowded-in private investment. He added that the government continues to prioritise effective capital expenditure through budgetary allocation towards infrastructure and support states and UTs through the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) to incentivise capital expenditure.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 24037.70, down by 150.00 points or 0.62% after trading in a range of 23973.70 and 24166.30. There were 11 stocks advancing against 39 stocks declining on the index.
