Benchmarks continued their trade deep in red as brent crude oil prices surged past the $94 a barrel mark amid escalating tensions in West Asia and threats by the Houthi rebels to the shipping in the region. Investors took a cautious approach after US President Donald Trump announced that beginning August 1, America will continue to have a 0% tariff or import duty on all generic drugs brought into the country for two years, after which it will be raised to 100% for one year, and 200% thereafter. The think tank GTRI has warned that US tariffs on generic medicines could significantly impact India's largest pharma export market.
On the global front, Asian equity markets were trading mixed as a rebound in memory and semiconductor stocks on optimism over AI-driven demand helped offset rising geopolitical tensions in the West Asia. European equity markets were trading higher tracking gains on Wall Street overnight.
The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 76745.78, down by 724.33 points or 0.93% after trading in a range of 76641.19 and 77384.95. There were 6 stocks advancing against 24 stocks declining on the index.
The alone gaining sectoral index on the BSE was FMCG up by 0.28%, while Realty down by 2.57%, IT down by 1.56%, Healthcare down by 1.37%, Bankex down by 1.20% and TECK down by 0.97% were the top losing indices on BSE.
The top gainers on the Sensex were Power Grid Corporation up by 0.85%, Hindustan Unilever up by 0.65%, Titan Company up by 0.40%, NTPC up by 0.36% and Bharti Airtel up by 0.13%. On the flip side, Interglobe Aviation down by 3.53%, Infosys down by 2.48%, State Bank of India down by 2.03%, Kotak Mahindra Bank down by 1.70% and ICICI Bank down by 1.60% were the top losers.
Meanwhile, India's renewable energy sector has recorded remarkable growth over the past decade, with installed renewable energy capacity in the country increasing nearly fourfold from 76.38 Gigawatt (GW) in 2014 to 288.58 GW as of June 30, 2026, underscoring the country's rapid progress in the global clean energy transition. Among renewable sources, the solar power accounts for the largest share of installed renewable capacity at 162.15 GW, followed by wind power (57.44 GW), hydropower (57.24 GW) and bio power (11.75 GW).
Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said India's total installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity stood at 297.36 GW as of June 30, 2026, comprising 288.58 GW of renewable energy and 8.78 GW of nuclear power.
He said the sector has also witnessed significant investment momentum, attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) worth $45.72 billion between FY14 and FY26. During the same period, domestic financial institutions (12 public sector banks, IREDA, PFC, REC, IIFCL, NaBFID and SIDBI) have deployed Rs 12.32 lakh crore towards the renewable energy sector.
The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23983.35, down by 204.35 points or 0.84% after trading in a range of 23961.40 and 24166.30. There were 9 stocks advancing against 41 stocks declining on the index.
The top gainers on Nifty were Bajaj Auto up by 5.31%, Nestle India up by 2.79%, Tata Consumer Products up by 1.22%, ONGC up by 0.76% and Power Grid Corporation up by 0.75%. On the flip side, Interglobe Aviation down by 3.53%, Infosys down by 2.31%, JIO Financial Services down by 2.25%, State Bank Of India down by 2.00% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles down by 1.78% were the top losers.
Asian equity markets were trading mixed; Taiwan Weighted added 592.91 points or 1.32% to 44,825.78, KOSPI increased 49.75 points or 0.73% to 6,797.70, Straits Times rose 57.95 points or 1.05% to 5,584.67 and Shanghai Composite strengthened 2.66 points or 0.07% to 3,867.03, while Nikkei 225 slipped 66.19 points or 0.1% to 66,166.00, Hang Seng declined 259.29 points or 1.04% to 24,873.00, and Jakarta Composite plunged 21.32 points or 0.34% to 6,318.70.
European equity markets were trading higher; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 132.31 points or 1.25% to 10,718.22, France’s CAC rose 86.66 points or 1.04% to 8,449.80 and Germany’s DAX gained 209.55 points or 0.84% to 25,220.90.
