Extending losing streak for fourth straight session, Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty ended lower with cut of over half a percent on Thursday, as surge in crude oil prices after Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis an attacked on two Saudi oil tankers. Index made a negative start following mixed cues for other Asian markets as renewed hostilities between the US and Iran weighed on market sentiment. Besides, cautiousness came in with renewed foreign fund outflow. As per exchange data, foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 819.20 crore on July 22. In second half of the session, index intensified its losses driven by sharp selloff in Reliance Industries, HDFC bank, and Bajaj Finance. Meanwhile, traders overlooked the Reserve Bank Bulletin said Indian economy has navigated the external uncertainties well and the recovery of foreign investments in recent months shows a revival of confidence. Finally, Nifty ended below 23,900 mark.
Most of the sectorial indices ended in red except Auto and Media stocks. The top gainers from the F&O segment were Hero MotoCorp, Nuvama Wealth Management and SBI Life Insurance Company. On the other hand, the top losers were SRF, Adani Green Energy and IndusInd Bank. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 24900 - 25100 calls and 22900 - 23100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.
India Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge for market’s short-term expectation of volatility increased by 1.37% and reached 13.48. The 50 share Nifty down by 126.65 point or 0.53% to settle at 23,869.60.
Nifty July 2026 futures closed at 23886.00 (LTP) on Thursday, at a premium of 16.40 points over spot closing of 23869.60, while Nifty August 2026 futures ended at 23950.00 (LTP), at a premium of 80.40 points over spot closing. Nifty July futures saw an addition of 8,782 units, taking the total open interest (Contracts) to 2,31,080 units. The near month derivatives contract will expire on July 28, 2026. (Provisional)
From the most active contracts, HDFC Bank July 2026 futures traded at a premium of 0.10 points at 745.95 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 745.85. The numbers of contracts traded were 1,04,491. (Provisional)
