Indices remain positive in early afternoon session

28 Jul 2026 Evaluate

Domestic equity indices remained positive and were trading marginally higher in the early afternoon session, supported by buying in TCS, Tech Mahindra, Eternal, HCL Technologies and Infosys. Falling crude oil prices supported domestic market sentiment. Crude oil prices fell after a pause in fighting between the U.S. and Iran held, raising hopes for a de-escalation in the Middle East conflict that has upended energy supplies. However, gains were capped as foreign institutional investors were net sellers of Rs 1688.23 crore in the cash segment on July 27, 2026.  On the BSE sectoral front, buying was seen in IT, TECK, Realty, Consumer Durables and Consumer Discretionary, while selling was witnessed in Capital Goods, Power, Utilities, Industrials and FMCG.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading in the red, with South Korea and Japan leading losses, as fresh concerns over artificial intelligence investments sparked selling in global chipmakers. Back home, in the stock specific development, Zaggle Prepaid Ocean Services surged as the company entered into an agreement with Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) on July 27, 2026.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 76956.37, up by 120.59 points or 0.16% after trading in a range of 76705.22 and 76988.48. There were 19 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 3.56%, TECK up by 2.15%, Realty up by 1.54%, Consumer Durables up by 0.62% and Consumer Disc up by 0.42%, while Capital Goods down by 2.15%, Power down by 2.10%, Utilities down by 1.49%, Industrials down by 1.21% and FMCG down by 0.87% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were TCS up by 5.00%, Tech Mahindra up by 3.59%, Eternal up by 3.35%, HCL Technologies up by 3.20% and Infosys up by 2.96%. On the flip side, Hindustan Unilever down by 4.59%, Bharat Electronics down by 2.90%, NTPC down by 1.83%, Power Grid down by 1.33% and ITC down by 0.87% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Rating agency ICRA in its latest report has said that penetration of alternate fuels, including CNG/LNG and electric vehicles (EV), in the Indian commercial vehicle (CV) industry is expected to increase to 40-45 per cent by FY30 from 27 per cent in FY26. It said CNG/LNG penetration in the CV segment is projected to reach 30-35 per cent by FY30, while EV penetration is likely to rise to 10-15 per cent. The growth in EV adoption is expected to be driven primarily by the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) bus segment.

According to the report, CNG/LNG has emerged as a key alternative fuel, with its share in the CV industry rising to 25 per cent in FY26 from 7 per cent in FY21. On the other hand, diesel's share declined to 67 per cent from 86 per cent during the same period, supported by stricter emission norms, regulatory initiatives, and declining total cost of ownership (TCO) of alternative fuel technologies (CNG, LNG and EV), driven by regulatory support. Petrol continues to have a limited presence in the CV market, accounting for less than 10 per cent of sales in FY26 and remaining largely confined to the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. ICRA added that incentives under the PM E-Drive Scheme have significantly lowered procurement costs, which is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks in the coming years.

ICRA further stated that the adoption of electric and hybrid commercial vehicles, though modest at 2 per cent in FY26, is expected to accelerate over the medium term. The growth will be supported by government initiatives, including incentives, subsidies and tax benefits, along with the gradual development of the EV ecosystem, which is expected to improve affordability and drive wider adoption.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 24030.80, up by 34.85 points or 0.15% after trading in a range of 23961.95 and 24041.15. There were 31 stocks advancing against 19 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were TCS up by 5.02%, Tech Mahindra up by 3.54%, Eternal up by 3.35%, HCL Technologies up by 3.26% and Nestle India up by 3.01%. On the flip side, Hindustan Unilever down by 4.58%, Bharat Electronics down by 2.91%, Coal India down by 2.80%, NTPC down by 1.87% and Tata Consumer down by 1.59% were the top losers.
