The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the second Trial Index of Services Production (ISP) for May 2026 with 2024-25 as the base year, covering 19 service sub-sectors. It stated 8 of the 19 sub-sectors recorded double-digit year-on-year growth in May 2026, while 16 sub-sectors registered positive growth compared with May 2025.
The top eight Sub-sectors reporting strong growth in May, 2026 were Accommodation and Food (27.4%), Real Estate (17.7%), Retail Trade (13.3%), Banking (12.1%), Telecommunications (11.8%), Warehousing and support activities for transportation rose (11.5%), Professional, scientific & technical services including R & D increased (11.0%) and IT and computer related services (10.3%).
Besides, Repair services advanced 9.8%, Water Transport rose 5.6%, Administrative and support services surged 5.0%, Road transport rose 4.4%, Wholesale trade increased 3.7%, Railway transport gained 3.4%, Insurance increased 2.7%, and Arts, entertainment and recreation services was up by 1.6%. However, it said that three sub-sectors registered annual contractions in May 2026 were Information and broadcasting (-7.6%), Air transport (-2.8%), Postal and courier services (-1.0%).
The maiden sub-sectors trial ISP for April 2026 was released on July 14, 2026. The ministry said the monthly ISPs are being published on an experimental basis. The publication of Trial Series would enable MoSPI to examine data quality, test its resilience and also receive feedback from stakeholders and users. It added Indices of Railways, Banking and Insurance sub-sectors are based on provisional monthly data and would undergo revision on an annual basis.
