Lok Sabha passes bill to increase strength of Supreme Court judges

03 Aug 2026 Evaluate

The Lok Sabha (LS) passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 without a debate, as opposition members persisted with slogan-shouting over the issues of NEET paper leak and alleged theft of Ram temple donations. The bill seeks to increase the strength of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.

The Bill was moved in the post-lunch session by Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal. After a brief introductory statement by the minister, the Chair invited MPs to speak. However, with the sloganeering continuing, the bill was put to a voice vote and passed.

Arjun Ram Meghwal said that the Bill has been brought keeping in view the pendency of cases before the Supreme Court and to improve the efficiency of the Court.

After the passage of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, the House was adjourned for the day.
