The Agriculture Ministry in its data has showed that area sown to kharif crops was down by 17.96 lakh hectares to 967.92 lakh hectares as on August 07 of 2026. Sowing had covered 985.89 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. Total kharif coverage stood at 1134.27 lakh hectares in 2025. Kharif sowing begins with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June, with harvesting starting from October.
Paddy, the principal kharif crop, was sown in 344.78 lakh hectares as on August 07, down from 360.67 lakh hectares a year earlier. Pulses acreage also fell to 103.78 lakh hectares from 105.73 lakh hectares. Arhar was sown in 37.53 lakh hectares against 40.14 lakh hectares, and Moongbean in 31.37 lakh hectares against 33.21 lakh hectares. However, Urdbean area rose to 22.86 lakh hectares from 20.29 lakh hectares.
Shri Anna cum Coarse cereals acreage stood lower at 168.50 lakh hectares, against 173.21 lakh hectares a year ago. Maize was sown in 87.15 lakh hectares, jowar in 12.82 lakh hectares, bajra in 62.44 lakh hectares, ragi in 2.80 lakh hectares, and Small millets in 3.30 lakh hectares.
Oilseeds area rose marginally to 180.20 lakh hectares (from 175.01 lakh hectares), with soyabean at 119.92 lakh hectares (from 119.66 lakh hectares), groundnut at 46.82 lakh hectares (from 43.11 lakh hectares) and sunflower at 1.01 lakh hectares (from 0.59 lakh hectares), Sesamum at 9.96 lakh hectares (from 8.52 lakh hectares).
Among cash crops, sugarcane area edged down to 58.31 lakh hectares as on August 07 from 58.62 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. Cotton acreage fell to 106.01 lakh hectares from 106.42 lakh hectares. However, Jute/mesta area rose marginally to 6.34 lakh hectares from 6.22 lakh hectares.
