Nifty ends marginally lower on Wednesday

12 Aug 2026 Evaluate

Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty ended marginally lower on Wednesday amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Index made a flat-to-positive start following mixed cues from global markets. But soon, market slipped below natural line and extended its losses as elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty over re-opening of Strait of Hormuz kept investors on edge. Further, sharp selling in IT and FMCG stocks dragged market lower. However, in last leg of the session, Index staged some recovery as traders took some support with the government’s data showing that India’s net direct tax collections rose by 23.09% to over Rs 8.11 lakh crore as of August 10 in the current fiscal year (FY27). Further, some support also came in as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought Indian equities worth Rs 258.55 crore on August 11. Finally, Nifty ended below 24,450 mark.

Traders were seen piling up positions in PSU Bank, Media and Metal stocks, while selling was witnessed in IT, FMCG and Auto. The top gainers from the F&O segment were National Aluminium Company, Force Motors and Vodafone Idea. On the other hand, the top losers were Godrej Consumer Products, PI Industries and Tata Consultancy Services. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 24900 - 25100 calls and 23900 - 24100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.

India Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge for market’s short-term expectation of volatility decreased by 1.58% and reached 11.67. The 50 share Nifty down by 35.75 point or 0.15% to settle at 24,435.95.
