Post Session: Quick Review

17 Aug 2026 Evaluate

Indian equity markets ended lower on Monday, weighed down by rising crude oil prices amid continued uncertainty over U.S.-Iran peace talks and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. However, losses were limited after exchange data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 508.12 crore on Friday.

Both the Sensex and Nifty ended in negative territory, weighed down by broad-based selling in select IT heavyweights. However, value buying at lower levels helped to limit the losses and provided some support to the markets.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India’s current account deficit stands at $6.2 billion in June: Traders were cautious as preliminary data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed that India’s current account deficit stood at $6.2 billion in June, compared with a surplus of $1.2 billion in the year-ago month.

India’s manufacturing sector stands as pillar of self-reliance, progress: Traders took a note of the government’s latest data report showing that India’s manufacturing sector stands as a pillar of self-reliance and progress, now contributing about 16-17 percent of GDP and providing employment to over 27 million workers.

India's exports to FTA partner countries record robust growth in Q1FY27: Traders overlooked the commerce ministry data showing that India's exports to key free trade agreement (FTA) partner countries recorded robust growth in the first quarter of 2026-27 (Q1FY27), with shipments to Singapore and Sri Lanka more than doubling.

On the global front: European markets were trading mostly green, as investors kept a close eye on geopolitical developments in the Middle East. Asian markets ended mostly in green after preliminary data showed Japan’s economy expanded less than expected in the second quarter, as weak domestic demand offset robust exports.

The BSE Sensex ended at 77728.16, down by 281.09 points or 0.36% after trading in a range of 77453.75 and 77928.68. There were 7 stocks advancing against 23 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Realty up by 1.38%, Metal up by 1.03%, Capital Goods up by 0.78%, Industrials up by 0.60%, Basic Materials up by 0.45%, while IT down by 1.74%, TECK down by 1.64%, Telecom down by 1.16%, FMCG down by 0.79%, and Utilities down by 0.74% were the top losing indices on BSE. (Provisional)

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tata Steel up by 1.47%, Axis Bank up by 1.03%, Reliance Industries up by 0.80%, Bharat Electronics up by 0.49% and HDFC Bank up by 0.36%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 2.66%, HCL Technologies down by 2.53%, Sun Pharma down by 2.20%, TCS down by 1.87% and Tech Mahindra down by 1.77% were the top losers. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry, in its latest data, has shown that Europe emerged as the top destination for Indian electric motor car exports in the first quarter of 2026-27 (Q1FY27), with Spain becoming the largest market. Exports to Spain rose to $146.4 million, accounting for nearly 40% of India’s total exports under this category. A total of 4,007 electric vehicles were shipped to Spain during the quarter, making it the single largest destination by both value and volume.

The United Kingdom (UK) emerged as the second-largest market, recording imports worth $78.7 million compared with almost negligible shipments in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Several other European economies also witnessed strong growth in imports of Indian electric vehicles. Exports to Germany reached $25.1 million, followed by Norway ($21.1 million) and Denmark ($21 million). Additional demand came from Belgium ($12.9 million), the Netherlands ($12 million), Greece ($3.8 million), Italy ($2.7 million), Sweden ($2.1 million), and Poland ($1.6 million).

Besides, the data showed that India’s exports of electric motor cars surged in Q1FY27, with export earnings rising sharply to $369 million from $22.2 million a year earlier, while shipments jumped to 10,802 vehicles from 1,309 units, reflecting growing global competitiveness of India’s electric mobility industry. The growth reflects the rising international acceptance of India-manufactured electric vehicles (EVs) and the country’s emergence as a key manufacturing hub for sustainable mobility solutions.

The CNX Nifty ended at 24287.65, down by 78.35 points or 0.32% after trading in a range of 24226.95 and 24360.10. There were 18 stocks advancing against 31 stocks declining on the index, while one stock remained unchanged. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Hindalco Industries up by 1.98%, Tata Steel up by 1.36%, HDFC Life Insurance up by 1.33%, ONGC up by 0.88% and Axis Bank up by 0.81%. On the flip side, HCL Technologies down by 2.57%, Infosys down by 2.51%, Sun Pharma down by 2.49%, TCS down by 2.02% and Nestle India down by 1.94% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading mostly in green; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 1.16 points or 0.01% to 10,751.27, and Germany’s DAX inched up 1.69 points or 0.01% to 26,442.00, while France’s CAC fell 13.3 points or 0.15% to 8,623.50.

Asian markets ended mostly higher on Monday, even as Wall Street stocks edged back from their all-time highs following a weaker-than-expected report on the US economy. Disappointing US retail sales and consumer sentiment data tempered expectations for a US interest rate hike. Japanese shares gained after the Japanese government reported that the economy grew slightly faster than forecast in the April-June quarter, expanding at a 1.1% annual pace even as private spending and investment stayed flat and export growth slowed. In quarterly terms, the economy grew 0.3% in the second quarter of the year. Meanwhile, the South Korean and Indonesian markets were closed for their respective national holidays.
