Extending its losing streak for the seventh straight session, Nifty ended lower on Wednesday amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the West Asia region, after the US President Donald Trump denied any undergoing and scheduled talks with Iran to end the war, sparked crude oil prices to trade above $91 per barrel. After starting flat to negative, the index extended its losses and remained under pressure until the end of the session. Traders paid no heed towards Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s statement that he will undertake a four-day visit to Japan from August 24, 2026 to hold discussions on strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries. Finally, Nifty ended below 24,100 mark.
Most of the sectorial indices ended in red except IT and Consumer Durables stocks. The top gainers from the F&O segment were Kaynes Technology India, Nippon Life India Asset Management and PNB Housing Finance. On the other hand, the top losers were Hitachi Energy India, Adani Energy Solutions and CG Power and Industrial Solutions. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 24400 - 24600 calls and 23900 - 24100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.
India Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge for market’s short-term expectation of volatility decreased by 0.50% and reached 11.33. The 50 share Nifty down by 76.60 point or 0.32% to settle at 24,078.30.
Nifty August 2026 futures closed at 24108.90 (LTP) on Wednesday, at a premium of 30.60 points over spot closing of 24078.30, while Nifty September 2026 futures ended at 24230.00 (LTP), at a premium of 151.70 points over spot closing. Nifty August futures saw an addition of 3,600 units, taking the total open interest (Contracts) to 2,04,088 units. The near month derivatives contract will expire on August 25, 2026. (Provisional)
From the most active contracts, HDFC Bank August 2026 futures traded at a premium of 2.00 points at 722.00 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 720.00. The numbers of contracts traded were 71,264. (Provisional)
Reliance Industries August 2026 futures traded at a discount of 3.50 points at 1307.50 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 1311.00. The numbers of contracts traded were 33,326. (Provisional)
Infosys August 2026 futures traded at a premium of 4.80 points at 1124.60 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 1119.80. The numbers of contracts traded were 27,271. (Provisional)
