Rupee witnesses mild weakness against US dollar on Thursday

20 Aug 2026 Evaluate

Indian rupee has witnessed mild weakness against US dollar on Thursday as surging crude oil price continued to put pressure on rupee with Brent crude oil prices trading over $94 a barrel mark amid lingering West Asia tensions. However, rupee got some support amid weaker dollar after US Treasury Department announced that it will double long-duration bond buybacks to at least $4 billion per operation. Besides, foreign capital inflows into the Indian capital markets also help the domestic currency. Foreign institutional investors were the net buyers on Wednesday’s session, buying securities worth Rs 407.99 crore. On the global front, Australian dollar has weakened against US dollar on Thursday softer labour market data reduced expectations of another rate hike by Reserve Bank of Australia.

Finally, the rupee ended at 95.74 (Provisional), weakened by 1 paisa from its previous close of 95.73 on Wednesday. The currency touched a high and low of 95.74 and 95.56 respectively.
