Western Carriers (India) wins 15-year contract to operate GCT at Kolkata Port

02 Sep 2026 Evaluate

Western Carriers (India) has secured the development and operations of the General Cargo Terminal (GCT) for handling containers and other cargo at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) under the Syamaprasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for a period of 15 years. The development marks an important step in strengthening logistics infrastructure in Eastern India and aligns with the Government of India's ongoing initiatives, including the National Logistics Policy, PM Gati Shakti, Multi Modal Logistics Parks, Bharatmala, Sagarmala, Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC), and the Logistics Efficiency Enhancement Program (LEEP). Together, these initiatives are enabling a more integrated, multimodal and efficient logistics ecosystem across the country.

SMPA serves as a key gateway to Eastern India and benefits from strong connectivity through road, rail and inland waterways. The Kolkata Dock System is linked to the Eastern Railway network through the Sealdah and Budge Budge sections, facilitating seamless cargo movement.

The terminal is currently operational, and Western Carriers will immediately initiate the next phase of development aimed at enhancing cargo handling capacity, improving operational efficiency and expanding service offerings. As per the Port Authority's initial estimates, the proposed civil infrastructure development is expected to involve an investment of around Rs 13.68 crore, subject to revision as the project progresses.

Western Carriers (India) is one of India’s largest multi-modal, rail-focused, 4PL asset light logistics companies. With a scalable, technology-enabled business model, it delivers customized, end-to-end 3PL and 4PL logistics solutions, integrating road, rail, water and air transport along with value-added services across the supply chain.
