Tata Steel commissions coke oven gas injection project in Meramandali

11 Sep 2026 Evaluate

Tata Steel has commissioned Coke Oven Gas (COG) Injection Project at Blast Furnace 1 at its Meramandali plant. This is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the Indian steel industry. The initiative underscores the company's unwavering commitment to its Net Zero by 2045 target and highlights its leadership in deploying breakthrough technologies for low-carbon iron and steel production.

In an integrated steel plant, COG - a hydrogen and hydrocarbon-rich byproduct gas - is typically used for power generation, heating, or simply flared. The company has successfully implemented the COG injection in the blast furnace through tuyeres, substituting fossil fuel as a reductant, thereby reducing the environmental impact. Apart from reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, it also provides a unique opportunity to operate the blast furnace with a three-fuel system, enhancing operational flexibility and efficiency.

Additionally, the initiative strengthens the company’s leadership in green steel production through the safe and stable operation of advanced injection technologies. The company has been a pioneer in the adoption of low-carbon blast furnace technologies, successfully demonstrating coal bed methane, hydrogen, and biochar injection in the blast furnace.

Tata Steel, the flagship company of the Tata group, is the first integrated steel plant in Asia and is now the world’s second most geographically diversified steel producer and a Fortune 500 company.
