Indian markets keep heads above water in early noon deals

In a highly volatile session, Indian equity benchmarks managed to keep their heads above water in early afternoon deals. Traders got comfort, after the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released Index of Services Production (ISP) for July 2026, which shown that 17 out of the 19 sub-sectors recorded positive growth, while 10 sub-sector recorded double-digit growth during the same period. Both Sensex and Nifty were trading in the green, supported by IT stocks, while easing crude prices were also providing some relief. 

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in green, after China's manufacturing and services sectors expanded at faster rates in September as robust new orders underpinned employment. The survey results from S&P Global showed that the RatingDog China general manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 52.1 in September from 51.5 in August.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 72940.39, up by 411.32 points or 0.57% after trading in a range of 72440.05 and 72945.89. There were 18 stocks advancing against 12 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Bankex up by 1.36%, IT up by 1.05%, Telecom up by 1.02%, Energy up by 0.93% and PSU up by 0.92%, while Healthcare down by 1.89% and Consumer Durables down by 0.38% were the only losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were ICICI Bank up by 2.85%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 2.08%, TCS up by 1.82%, Axis Bank up by 1.43% and Interglobe Aviation up by 1.31%. On the flip side, Eternal down by 2.26%, Adani Ports & SEZ down by 1.88%, Sun Pharma down by 1.63%, Bajaj Finserv down by 1.36% and Bajaj Finance down by 1.23% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released Index of Services Production (ISP) for July 2026, which shown that 17 out of the 19 sub-sectors recorded positive growth, while 10 sub-sector recorded double-digit growth during the same period. Top sub-sectors reporting strong growth in July 2026 were Administrative and Support Services, Retail Trade, Real Estate, Accommodation and Food, and Banking, with growth of 20.9%, 18.5%,14.4%, 12.6% and 12.3%, respectively. 

Other growing sub-sectors were Wholesale Trade with rise of 12.1%, Telecommunications with 11%, IT and computer related services with 10.7%, Professional, scientific & technical services including R & D with 10.4%, Information and Broadcasting with 10%, Road Transport with 9.9%, Warehousing and support activities for transportation with 9.8%, Insurance with 8.9%, Postal and Courier with 8.7%, Water Transport with 7.7%, Railway Transport with 7.5%, and Arts, Entertainment and Recreation Services with 1.7%. 

However, 'Repair services' and 'Air transport' were the only sub-sectors which recorded contraction in services production. The Repair services recorded 5.00% fall in service production, while Air transport service production contracted by 8.4% in July, 2026.

The ministry said the monthly ISPs are being published on an experimental basis. The publication of Trial Series would enable MoSPI to examine data quality, test its resilience and also receive feedback from stakeholders and users. It added Indices of Railways, Banking and Insurance sub-sectors are based on provisional monthly data and would undergo revision on an annual basis.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22768.15, up by 51.95 points or 0.23% after trading in a range of 22659.80 and 22771.80. There were 23 stocks advancing against 27 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were ICICI Bank up by 3.08%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 2.46%, TCS up by 1.94%, Axis Bank up by 1.69% and Interglobe Aviation up by 1.63%. On the flip side, Apollo Hospital Ent. down by 5.71%, Max Healthcare Inst. down by 4.77%, Eternal down by 2.88%, BSE down by 2.79% and SBI Life Insurance down by 2.28% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in green; Jakarta Composite gained 5.56 points or 0.09% to 6,127.26, Taiwan Weighted added 308.17 points or 0.64% to 47,940.13, Hang Seng advanced 61.43 points or 0.25% to 24,585.00, Nikkei 225 surged 1389.73 points or 2.08% to 66,871.00 and Shanghai Composite strengthened 11.74 points or 0.31% to 3,842.19, while KOSPI dropped 32.77 points or 0.48% to 6,838.04 and Straits Times fell 16.77 points or 0.29% to 5,698.07.
