Extending its losses for fourth straight session, Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty -- ended sharply lower on Thursday. Index made a negative start, as concerns over prolonged supply disruptions linked to the West Asia region continued to weigh on market sentiments. Besides, traders remained cautious after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that India received 87.4% of its long-period average (LPA) rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June to September, recording a rainfall deficit of about 13% between June 1 and September 30. In second half of the session, index extended its losses as continued foreign fund outflow dampened investors' sentiments. As per exchange data, foreign institutional investors offloaded Indian equities worth Rs 10,148.41 crore on September 30, 2026. However, in last leg of the session, market witnessed some recovery but eventually ended near 22,400 mark.
Most of the sectorial indices ended in red except IT stocks. The top gainers from the F&O segment were MphasiS, Coforge and Siemens Energy India. On the other hand, the top losers were PB Fintech, Bajaj Auto and UNO Minda. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 23400 - 23600 calls and 22900 - 23100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.
