22 Oct 2026 Evaluate

The Election Commission (EC) announced that the Rajya Sabha bypoll in Madhya Pradesh to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Union minister L Murugan will take place on November 12.

Murugan had quit the Union council of ministers and the Rajya Sabha on October 14. He was minister of state for parliamentary affairs and information and broadcasting. His term was originally scheduled to continue until April 2, 2030.

While quitting, Murugan had said that he wants to focus on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu. Murugan’s sudden exit has sparked speculation of a reshuffle of the Council of Ministers.

The nominations can be filed from October 26 to November 2, with scrutiny set for November 3. Candidates can withdraw nominations until November 5. Polling will be held between 9 am and 4 pm on November 12, and counting of votes will begin at 5 pm the same day, according to the schedule.
