Spices Board India has set up its sixth Quality Evaluation Laboratory-cum-Training Centre (QEL) at Tuticorin in state of Tamil Nadu. This step has been taken by board in order to boost the export of quality spices and spice products. The facility, set up at an investment of Rs 8 crore, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry on December 01, 2013.

The laboratory can test samples for 10 parameters such as total plate count, yeast and mould count, samonella, coliforms, aflatoxin, sudan eye, moisture, colour value, volatile oil and capsaicin. Besides, QEL would help to identify the pesticides, illegal dilution and other life-threatening funguses seen in spices with advanced equipment.

Further, the board also plans to conduct training and to carry out R&D project work in quality control aspects of spice and spice products to improve its competence.
