Cardamom production shows rising trend during last three years

19 Dec 2013 Evaluate

The production of cardamom in the country is showing rising trend during the last three years, as per information provided by Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Tariq Anwar. Cardamom production for 2009-10 stood at 10,075 tonnes while for 2010-11 and 2011-12 the production stood at 10,380 tonnes and 15,000 tonnes respectively.

For the holistic development of horticulture including cardamom in the country the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation is implementing Centrally Sponsored Schemes namely Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States (HMNEH) and National Horticulture Mission (NHM). Under the missions, financial assistance is provided for taking up various activities related to horticulture development such as production of quality planting material, area coverage through high yielding varieties, rejuvenation/replanting of old and senile orchards, creation of water resources, promotion of integrated nutrient & pest management, technology dissemination through demonstration, human resource development and creation of post harvest management & marketing infrastructure.

Further, in order to increase production, productivity and quality of cardamom, the Spices Board under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries is also implementing long and short term programmes. Under these programmes assistance is provided for research, replanting, supply of quality planting material, establishment of water storage, installation of improved cardamom curing devices, quality improvement programme, extension support and marketing etc.
