Sowing of Rabi crops crosses 619 lakh hectare

The sowing of Rabi crops has been very brisk in the last one week, as per preliminary reports received on the sowing of crops from different states. The total rabi sown area during the week ending January 10, 2014 stands at 619.04 lakh hectare as compared to 587.01 lakh hectare at this time last year. 

In the case of wheat, more area has been reported from Madhya Pradesh (14.22 lakh ha), Rajasthan (4.88 L.ha) and Uttar Pradesh (4.73 L.ha). Higher sowing of pulses has been reported in Maharashtra (6.13 L.ha), Rajasthan (3.78 L.ha) and Madhya Pradesh (3.73 L.ha). Higher area under oilseeds is reported mainly from Rajasthan (3.04 L.ha). There is sharp decline in area under coarse cereals in Maharashtra (3.57 L.ha).

Total Pulses have been sown in 155.16 lakh hectare so far in the current Rabi season as compared to 147.35 lakh hectare sown in 2012-13 season. Besides, oilseeds have been sown in 86.22 lakh hectare as compared to 82.74 lakh hectare last year.

Further, wheat has been sown in 311.86 lakh hectare so far compared to 291.27 lakh hectare last year while coarse cereals has been sown in 58.55 lakh hectare so far compared to 60.08 lakh hectare sown last year. Rabi rice has been sown in 7.25 lakh hectare.
