India’s wireless subscriber base at 873.61 million in Sept 2011

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), during September, Indian telecom service providers added 7.9 million new subscribers, as a result the total number of wireless users in India stood at 873.61 million. The broadband subscriber base showed marginal increase in September, it stood at 12.84 million in September compared to 12.69 million in August.

By the end of September, total telecom base of India stood at 906.9 million as a result the teledensity, which is telecom connection per 100 people, stood at 75.48. However, the number of wireline subscribers declined to 33.3 million in September from 34.07 million in August.

Around 25.70 lakh users have applied for mobile number portability (MNP) in September. Since the opening of MNP in November 2010, around 206.29 lakh subscribers across India had submitted request for changing their service providers whereas retaining their mobile numbers under MNP. In MNP Zone-I i.e. Northern and Western India, most of the request for change of service providers have received from Gujarat (20.09 lakh) followed by Maharashtra (16.93 lakh).  And in MNP Zone-II i.e. Southern and Eastern India, highest number of request have been received in Andhra Pradesh (16.47 lakh) followed by Karnataka (16.16 lakh).

During September, according to the Visitor Location Register (VLR), the number of active mobile subscribers was 617.76 million. The VLR numbers give information on active customers at any given point of time, excluding switched-off and out-of-coverage area customers.

On the same time, in September, the Idea Cellular topped in wireless category, it added 1.73 million users, and as a result, subscriber base surged to 100.18 million. Idea Cellular was followed by Bharti Airtel, which added 0.93 millon subscribers in September, taking its user base to 172.08 million.

In September, Vodafone added 0.84 million new subscribers, taking its user base to 144.99 million, whereas Aircel added around 0.60 million users in September. The government owned BSNL added 0.38 million subscribers as a result its total user base stood at 95.79 million. And another government owned telecom company MTNL registered 28,360 new users in September.
