The US markets closed mostly up on Tuesday, though disappointing earnings results from Verizon Communications Inc and the Travelers Cos. Inc. weighed on the Dow. The markets were closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and on Tuesday, a winter storm sent some traders home early in parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Investors focused on earnings releases in a week light on economic news ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for next week. The IMF has lifted its global outlook on the expectations that advanced economies will drive economic growth in 2014. The IMF lifted its global economic growth estimate at 3.7%, 0.1 percentage point higher that its October estimate. The multilateral agency estimated 2015 growth at 3.9%. The IMF estimated US 2014 economic growth at 2.8% from its October outlook at 2.6%.
The Nasdaq added 28.18 points or 0.67 percent to 4,225.76, the S&P 500 gained 5.10 points or 0.28 percent to 1,843.80 while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 44.12 points or 0.27 percent to 16,414.44.
Indian ADRs closed mostly in green on Tuesday; ICICI Bank was up 1.04%, HDFC Bank was up by 0.80%, Tata Motors was up by 0.47% and Infosys was up 0.25%. On the other hand, Wipro was down by 0.03%.
