Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna on Friday resigned as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Bahuguna said that according to direction of the party High Command, he tendered his resignation to the Governor. He will continue to work for the people.

Bahuguna's resignation comes after Congress President Sonia Gandhi held a meeting with senior party leaders in Delhi on Wednesday. Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat and Uttarakhand Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pritam Singh are the front runners for the coveted post. It is believed that the way Bahuguna handled the flash floods and the massive rescue and rehabilitation work in the State last year brought his leadership skills into question.
