Tamil Nadu government on Friday jettisoned the free colour television scheme, one of the DMK’s pet projects. The order under sixth phase of scheme for 7 lakh colour television was cancelled. Over 1 lakh already procured in the sixth phase would be distributed to orphanages and anganwadis. “Thank Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala for his address” said Jayalalithaa replying to the debate on motion.
The newly elected government started discarding DMK regime's pet projects with housing and insurance schemes named after M Karunanidhi and announced a probe into alleged irregularities in the construction of new assembly-cum-secretariat complex. Also, to set up an inquiry commission to probe allegations of 'excess and wasteful expenditure and deficiency in the standards of new Secretariat building' besides 'inordinate' delay. The new complex is being built at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
