Disappointed with the action taken by central government on inter-state issue over Mullaperiyar Dam, DMK chief - M Karunanidhi has called for an all-party meet to show that all sections of society are united on the issue. Karunanidhi has demanded the ruling party AIADMK to immediately act on the same.

'We should firmly announce that we are united on this issue and I believe that an all-party meeting will be useful in this regard,' said Karunanidhi. An all-party meeting would send the right signals that there is unity in Tamil Nadu on the decades-old controversy, he added.

DMK party will also stage a hunger strike and a 'mammoth human chain'' next week against Kerala state’s demand dismantle the structure and reaffirm Tamil Nadu's right on the dam, including storing water at 142 feet, as directed by the Supreme Court.

The dam built at the end of 18th century is located in Idukki District of Kerala, however, controlled and operated under a period lease by neighboring Tamil Nadu state. The 116 year old dam has led to dispute between two states over its safety concerns in the event of dam collapse. Kerala under whose jurisdiction the dam lies has proposed or decommissioning the dam and construction of a new dam, however, it was challenged by Tamil Nadu state whose farmers will be bear the brunt.
