CIL plans to install GPS-based movement tracking system in mines

Coal India (CIL), the world's largest miner, is planning to install GPS-based movement tracking system in its mines. The world's largest miner which is grappling with meeting production targets is taking this step in order to increase output of its major mines.

The company which has received the support from the Coal Ministry for the same plans to cover all major projects (mines) under the GPS-based movement tracking system at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.

The first phase of the installation of GPS-based coal handling and mining vehicle tracking system has almost been finished by the company. It has been done at a cost of nearly Rs 150 crore in 11 mines that produce 5 million tonne coal per year.

Recently, Coal India had cuts its production target to at least 440 million tonnes for the current financial year from the estimate of 452 million tonnes in its annual plan. The state-run company had lowered its production target due heavy rainfall, strike and delays in the grant of forestry and environmental clearances to coal projects.
