US markets close higher; Nasdaq climbs to 14-year intraday high

25 Feb 2014 Evaluate

The US markets closed higher on Monday, with the main indexes finishing with solid gains and Nasdaq climbing to 14-year intraday high, although they ended well off their session highs as buying momentum faded. Investors are also looking ahead to testimony from Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen scheduled on Thursday and a fresh estimate on US fourth-quarter GDP is expected on Friday. Yellen told lawmakers earlier this month that the Fed will continue to taper its bond buying program this year, but she stressed the need to keep interest rates low for a long time. On the economy front, a gauge of the US service sector fell in February to the lowest level in four months, with slower readings for employment and new business. The index hit 52.7 in February, down from 56.7 in January. Readings above 50 indicate an expansion, with higher readings signaling faster expansions.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Fed national activity index fell more-than-expected last month. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index fell to a seasonally adjusted -0.39, from -0.03 in the preceding month whose figure was revised down from 0.16.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 103.84 points or 0.64 percent, to 16,207.14. The Nasdaq Composite was up by 29.56 points or 0.69 percent, to 4,292.97 and the S&P 500 rose 11.36 points or 0.62 percent, to close at 1,847.61.

The Indian ADRs closed mostly in green on Monday; Dr. Reddy’s Lab was up 1.22%, HDFC Bank was up 0.75%, Wipro was up by 0.42% and ICICI Bank was up by 0.25%. On the other hand, Tata Motors was down by 0.04%.
