Food Corporation of India (FCI) has received the Government’s approval to export 10,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to three African nations - Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti - at economical cost of Rs 20,689.50 per tonne.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a notification said that ‘Export of 10,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to Horn of Africa (Kenya, Somalia & Djibouti) from the central pool stock of FCI at an economic cost has been permitted’.
In September this year, the Government had allowed the export of non-basmati rice through public sector undertakings under the food aid programme. Earlier in the start of the calendar year, after severe criticism over rising food article prices, the government said it will review import and export of all essential commodities and impose controls on exports and ease restrictions on imports, including cutting tariffs where necessary to improve domestic supplies.
