Markets ended flat in short special session

The Indian markets made a flat closing on Saturday’s short special trading session, though there was good recovery after a soft start but markets after surging to their day’s high gave up and ended lower, just in green by the end. Both major bourses BSE and NSE organized a special short trading session on Saturday, March 22, as BSE will rebalance its four indices viz; S&P BSE IPO, 500 Shariah, Mid Cap and Small Cap with effect from March 24.Lacking any foreign fund participation the market turnover remained low and the trade was choppy with benchmark indices moving in and out of the green terrain. Rate sensitives’ banking and realty suffered some selling on some buzz that even improved economic data unlikely to prompt RBI to ease rates in April, while the auto, consumer durables and auto supported the markets.

Finally BSE Sensex ended at 21755.32, up by 1.57 points or 0.01%, while the Nifty ended higher by 1.70 points or 0.03% at 6,494.90.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks on the BSE; Mid Cap index was up by 0.33%, while the Small Cap gained 0.69%.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Healthcare up by 0.66%, Consumer Durables up by 0.39%, Auto up by 0.36%, Oil & Gas was up by 0.26% and Capital Goods was up by 0.14%. On the other hand Metal down by 0.19%, Realty down by 0.09% and Bankex down by 0.05%, were the losers.

The top gainers among the Sensex stocks were, Cipla up by 1.77%, Sun Pharma up by 0.68%, Bharti Airtel up by 0.44%, M&M up by 0.43% and Dr Reddy’s was up by 0.36%. On the other hand Hindalco down by 1.50%, BHEL  down by 0.53%, Tata Power down by 0.50%, Infosys down by 0.34% and HDFC Bank down by 0.27% were the top losers.

The CNX Nifty touched a high and low of 6,502.65 and 6,481.35 before closing at 6,494.90. There were 28 advances against 22 declines on the index.

The top gainers of the Nifty were Cipla up by 2.36%, IDFC up by 2.11%, HCL Technology was up by 0.90%, NMDC up by 0.89% and Sunpharma was up by 0.87%. On the flip side Hindalco down by 1.90%, Asian Paint down by 0.67%, ACC down by 0.50%, Infy down by 0.35% and PNB down by 0.32% were the top losers.
