Bharti Airtel, Safaricom get conditional nod to buy yuMobile

Kenya's telecom regulator has conditionally allowed a unit of India's Bharti Airtel and nation's leading operator Safaricom to acquire the assets of Essar Telecom Kenya under the brand yuMobile.

As per the deal, Bharti Airtel and Safaricom each will have to pay a $5.4 million fee for Yu’s licence and meeting several conditions. The conditions cover areas such as infrastructure sharing and cooperation between the companies on customer money transfer services and SIM registrations.

Bharti Airtel is a leading integrated telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa. The company ranks amongst the top 5 mobile service providers globally in terms of subscribers.
