The index of Index of Eight Core Industries, having combined weight of 37.90% in the index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 4.5% in February 2014, higher compared to the index of February 2013. Its cumulative growth during April-February, 2013-14 was 2.6%.
Among core sectors, Electricity generation having 10.32% weight in index registered a growth of 10.4% in February, 2014 over the same month of corresponding period. During April to January 2013-14, the sector has registered cumulative growth of 5.7 % during April to February, 2013-14 over the corresponding period of previous year.
Steel and Cement sectors having weightage of 6.68% and 2.41% respectively in IIP index, registered a growth of 4.8% and 2.3% respectively, in the month under review over February 2013. In cumulative terms, Steel and Cement production was 4.2% and 3.3% during April to February 2013-14. Crude oil, with weightage of 5.22% in the index increased by 1.9% in February, 2014 over February, 2013, however its cumulative index during April to Jan February 2013-14 declined by 0.1% over corresponding period of previous year.
Additionally, Petroleum refinery production, representing 5.94% weight in IIP index, registered a growth of 3.2 % in February, 2014 over February, 2013 and its cumulative index during April to February, 2013-14 increased by 1.6 % over the corresponding period of previous year. Further, Coal production with weightage of 4.38% in index increased by 0.1% in February, 2014 over the same period of corresponding period. However, on cumulative basis, growth during April to February, 2013-14 increased by 0.9 % over corresponding period of previous year.
On the flip side, Fertilizer production with weightage of 1.25% in IIP index, declined by 0.7% in February 2014 over the same period in the corresponding year. Nevertheless, the cumulative index of Fertilizer production during April to February 2013-14 grew by 2.2 % during April to February, 2013-14 over the corresponding period of previous year.
Natural Gas production having weightage 1.71% in IIP index, too declined by 4.4% in February 2014 as compared to the month in February, 2013. The cumulative index for Natural Gas production during April to January 2013-14 declined by 13.3 % over corresponding period of previous year.
