State-run National Aluminium Company (NALCO) is in process of setting up a 50 MW wind power plant in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 274 crore. This is the company’s step towards some green initiatives to harness unconventional energy sources.
Also, NALCO jointly with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) is developing Kakarpar 3 & 4 nuclear power project in Gujarat at an estimated project cost of Rs 11,450 crore.
Further, the company’s smelter plant has bagged the prestigious National Energy Conservation Award for 2011. The company’s smelter received the award for its contribution in energy conservation, primarily in reduction of DC energy and HFO consumption in Potlines and Baking Oven.
NALCO was incorporated as a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Mines. The company has Asia's largest integrated aluminium complex, encompassing bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and casting, power generation, rail and port operations.
