Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) are yet to recover dues from subscribers for non-payment of bills amounting to over Rs 6,444 crore. As on March 31, 2011, MTNL has to recover Rs 1,103 crore from its subscribers while for BSNL the amount of recovery stands to Rs 5,341 crore.
For 2010-11, MTNL incurred losses of about Rs 2,800 crore while BSNL's losses stood at Rs 6,000 crore. During the year 2010-11, the amount realised by BSNL and MTNL from its customers against the outstanding bills of previous years and bills issued during the year are Rs 12,587 crore and Rs 863 crore, respectively.
MTNL was set up by the Government of India to upgrade the quality of telecom services, expand the telecom network, and introduce new services and to raise revenue for telecom development needs of India's key metros -- Delhi and Mumbai.
