About Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd

Scindia Steam Navigation Company, incorporated on March 27, 1919, was established as a shipping company. This was the first large scale Indian owned shipping company.

Since April 1997, the company has not undertaken any shipping or shipping-related activity. It continued maintenance operations and sale of its properties in compliance with various statutory and regulatory bodies. Scindia Workshop is a wholly-owned subsidiary.

The registered office of the company is situated at Scindia Colony, Building III, Sir M.V. Road, Andheri (E), Mumbai- 400069.

History

  • 1932: The company purchased the Bengal Burma SN Company.
  • 1937: The company entered the pilgrim trade to Saudi Arabia and in the same year took over the Indian Co-operative Navigation and Trading Company
  • 1947: Services between India and the USA began
  • 1948: Regular passenger and cargo services between Calcutta and the UK/ Continent started
  • 1950: A cargo and passenger service opened between India and Singapore
  • 1954: An India to East Africa route was inaugurated
  • 1956: An India to West Africa service commenced
  • 1964: Calcutta - Great Lakes service started
  • 1968: Service to the Persian Gulf was started
