Winter session extended by three days to clear Lokpal Bill

To escape the repeated confrontation caused over deferring the clearance of draft Lokpal Bill, UPA government has decided to extend the ongoing winter session by three days. The session was scheduled to end on December 22, 2011 however both the houses will now reconvene after Christmas break on December 27, 28 and 29. The highly publicized Lokpal Bill is likely to be tabled on December 27, 2011.

In the wake to fulfill the promise by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Anna Hazare that the Lokpal bill will be passed in the winter session, government has decided to extend the winter session. The social meliorist had warned government over clearance of Lokpal Bill in the winter session and if the latter fails to do so, he will once again fast from December 27.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said the session was being extended to allow for a proper discussion as the Opposition was not agreeable to passing these bills in a hurry without studying them.

During the ongoing winter session, Parliament has hardly done business as most of its sessions were adjourned for various reasons like entry of FDI in retail, price rise, Telangana. The winter session’s every business day is crucial since various significant Bills are on its agenda.
