With food inflation at a high of 15.46% for the week ended September 11, the government has decided to continue with the duty-free import of rice and edible oils and ban on export of non-basmati rice for some more time. The move is also aimed at keeping retail price of the grain under check during the festival season. The government would take stock of the situation again in January after assessing the level of production for 2010-11 crop year.
The government had scrapped import duty on rice from 70% in October 2009 to augment domestic supply, as the twin-impact of drought and floods had hit output by as much as 10.05 million tonne. The import duty exemption was to expire from September 30, 2010.
