Government’s assay of passing Lokpal Bill has ended with chaos in the upper assembly last night. Amid stormy debate between opposition and government, the last day of extended winter session was adjourned without fulfilling its main purpose of bringing Lokpal as law in the corruption tantalized nation. The bill will now have to be revised and presented again.
Of total 243 members Congress has only 71 members and requires opposition’s votes to pass the Bill. The government and opposition, post the adjournment of session amid chaotic scenes and without vote, were found playing blame game in front of media. The government said it had respected the constitution with the adjournment at midnight and that the people of India would know who was responsible for the failure to reach a vote. At the other end, largest opposition party’s leader Arun Jaitely said 'The government has lost all moral right to continue in power. It should resign immediately. The (ruling) Congress (party) was never serious and committed to bring a strong Lokpal. It knew that it would never be able to get the bill passed in the lower house, so it choreographed the entire drama of debate which continued till midnight.'
Anna Hazare and his team who were against the present version of Lokpal Bill as it excluded CBI from ombudsman’s ambit has decided to continue to campaign for a strong and effective Lokpal. According to Team Anna, government was obliged to clear the Bill however, the house was adjourned on the last day of winter session without vote which otherwise would have brought Lokpal law in country. 'The onus is on the government and they should have told the parliament members that we (all) are bound by the resolution passed by the house and the only thing is that we have to work on the mechanics,' said Kiran Bedi, Team Anna member.
