Petrol gets cheaper by Rs 1.09 per litre; diesel dearer by 56 paise

01 Aug 2014 Evaluate

In a bit of good news for common-man, petrol became cheaper by Rs 1.09 per litre in Delhi after state oil companies slashed the price of the fuel for the first time since mid-April after benchmark gasoline rates in the international market dropped. This reduction was excluding local levies and after including local sales tax or VAT, the actual reduction in pump rates came to 85 paise in Delhi. Petrol prices were last slashed on April 15, by 70 paise per litre, while branded or premium petrol was cut by over Rs 5 per litre on July 10.

However, the price of diesel was hiked by 56 paise in Delhi. With this late revision, Petrol will cost Rs 72.51 per litre in Delhi as against Rs 73.60 a litre currently. Similarly, diesel will be priced at Rs 58.40 per litre as compared to Rs 57.84 currently. If the current trend of diesel price hike was to continue than the fuel would be freed from state control within three months.

Besides, prices of non-subsidized domestic cooking gas also were cut by Rs 2.50 for a 14.2 kg cylinder and that of LPG commercial cylinder by Rs 4.00 for a 19 kg cylinder at Delhi on the back of downtrend of international LPG prices during this period.

These revision in rates are just part of exercise which the state-owned oil firms like BPCL, HPCL and Indian Oil undertake every 1st and 16th of every month based on the fortnightly average of international oil prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate post the government freed petrol prices from its control in June 2010.

Meanwhile, in case of diesel, state oil firms have been following the January 2013 policy of raising rates by up to 50 paise every month till such time that the under-recovery or the gap between the retail selling price and the actual cost is wiped out.
